What is an essay?
An essay is a type of text that from the scientific or cultural tradition is related to the free exposure of ideas, in which an idea is pointed and a subject or motive is reflected.
Precisely that freedom that is the fundamental characteristic of the essay makes it very difficult to offer an absolute definition of what an essay is and what its characteristics are, in such a way that there is a long tradition of authors and theories that have dedicated deep reflections to this task, some examples of it appear on the homepage of this site.
For practical purposes it can be pointed out that the essay is a text in which ideas and thoughts are exposed, with a mixture between an aesthetic–literary component and another scientific–academic component, whose objective is reflection in the field of knowledge. It can be said that the essay is a writing that is on the border between informative and literary texts.
Precisely, to be formed by this mixture between the scientific and the creative, there are those who have referred to the essay as the didactics made literature, it has also been defined as prose of ideas or literature of thought.
Some of the attempts to define and characterize the nature of the essay discuss what is the predominant aspect of the essay: whether the scientific–academic aspect or the exclusively literary–creative aspect and divide the types of essay according to the greater or lesser presence of these aspects. Such a distinction between literary essay and scientific–academic essay is fundamental since it determines the characteristics and formal requirements that each one must cover.
For the purposes of this site, the fundamental difference between a literary essay and an academic one is that while for the first the most important thing is the personal expression and the originality of the author when demonstrating his main idea, for the second it is important that the author defends his position with arguments and substantiated evidence which must be presented in the written document in a structured manner.
